Millers Green Light Railway

Live Steam Locomotives

Picture
Although not strictly the first locomotive to be purchased by the company, 'Squirrel' was the first running locomotive to use the track and assist with the construction of the MGLR. Squirrel was manufactured by I.P Engineering and carries  the works number BB390. The locomotive has been under regular use by the railway for the construction of the trackbed and sidings at the MGLR/North Midland Railway Terminus in Wirksworth and it is anticipated that she will see continued use in the yard at Ivet Low works with the possibility of some mixed freight trains from Hopton to Wirksworth. Squirrel will carry the plates of the No.1 locomotive until further notice.

The first locomotive to be purchased by the company was bought at the dispersal sale of the 'Newton Abbot China Clay Co' by one of the company directors. Unfortunately the loco was purchased as a 'non-runner' due to a leaking boiler/steam feed pipe and other minor steam leaks. The director who purchased the locomotive was fully aware of the problems with Otter prior to purchase, but was adamant that with the correct upgrades and a complete overhaul, she would prove a worthy haulier of passenger trains until profits from the railway could source a more modern locomotive. Once operational, Otter will carry the plates of the No.2 locomotive.
